I am, therefore I think...

Expand (a+b)^n.

Solution:
..................................................(a+b)^n
................................................(a. + .b) ^ n
.............................................. (a ..+.. .b) ^ n
............................................ (a... +... .b) ^ n
etc.
That forward in my mail made me grin big time!!... & also to reflect on my days of tryst with destiny....er...maths!!! How i ever managed to top my M.B.A is a mystery!:)

PS:Before you read further let me polish my image a bit .. I am quite adept in maths now... please dont be misled by my "past performance".

Class 1: Q: 67+45= ?.
Hmm I failed that test.. know why? Coz I started counting my fingers ...then my toes ..then the number of heads i could see around me...then i ran out of heads to count...it all added up to 60..i wrote 60 and gave up my paper:-)
now dont ask anything about subtraction...i could never make heads disappear...i am no magician u see!!:-)...and i ended up getting marks shaped something like a bald head...for some reason they called it zero!

I was then introduced to the concept of drawing sticks... to add up things of course, instead of heads! and i was just getting a hang of it, when...
... came the lessons in Multiplication and Division that confused me even further...
Class 2:
Q:16 x 27=?... Hmm...thats a hell lots of sticks, i thought!!! I spent whole of the next 2 hours just drawing and counting 16 sticks twenty seven times..(...er twenty three times only actually )...This time i ran out of time...and got hit with sticks on my hands...but for some reason they called it a cane :-)

...and just when i had learnt to add and subtract and got all the tables by heart...

Class 5 : ... came Linear equations. Well I always wondered why they kept calling it linear equations as there is nothing Linear about Linear equations.. they always came in parellels..:-)
Q: solve the following
6+4(x+y)=0 ----1
4+6(x+y)=0 --- 2 find x and y

...this time i did exactly what i was asked to do
6+4=10 hence 10(x+y)=0-- 1
4+6=10 hence 10(x+y)=0-- 2
Therefore in my best knowledge - x+y =0!! ....precisely equal to the marks I got:))

Class 7:Geometry was introduced ..so in one case we were given a problem where a triangle was given and 2 angles were given.. we had to find the third angle. Now I royally skipped the question. Ask why?.. :-) see the angles given were 45 degrees and 60 degrees.. I took out my protractor and measured the angles.. they hardly came up to 20 degrees and 30 degrees respectively.. so I concluded it was a PRINTING MISTAKE !!!:-)

Then They introduced me to the sin(e)ful world of trigonometry...
Q: Find the limit of [sin(7x)]/(5x) as x -> 0
answer...... [sin(70)]/(50).

next question....

Q. sin x
...------- = ?.....my answer.....six!!!
......n
Proof: cancel the n in the numerator and denominator.

what about statistics??... u ask
well...as they say, a statistician can have his head in an oven and his feet in ice, and he will say that on the average he feels fine...so i guess on an average...i did just FINE!!

Maths for me is a mystery that I want to solve sometime in the future. I loved maths when I was a kid, and sort of love it even now, though I'm not really involved in it at present. I hope to some day make a big new discovery, and make it big, but for that I need the patience and time. I think maths is best understood by relating it to real-life subjects, and can become amusing if you read the right books too. I recently read "1089 and all that", and I got thoroughly impressed by mathematics! I recommend you grab that book from a library and read it if you can :)

Raj: maths is always fun!...u know what is even more funnier, i now teach maths..just out of passion for the subject & i have never loved doing anything more than this!
hmmm.. i am learning it the hard way out that a wo-mans best friend can only be another wo/man!:) I guess the love of a pet, is just not destined for me:(

maya:hahah...hope u never chance upon ur maths teacher :P...and talking about 'chillar' change...i always have fun looking at the facial expression on the receiving end, when ever i hand over a bunch of change!!:-)

Voice: i love maths, voice...i have never mentioned anywhere that i hated maths!I just penned down a few funny experience i had with maths..and rather exaggerated a bit.And yes i drew sticks everytime i counted ...comeon i was only 5-6 yrs old then!:P :P

gaurav jain: yes, David Acheson's book is great for people who think maths is very difficult. But my love for maths grew when i took up vedic maths class just for fun..maths after that was always fun & very easy...have always stood first after that once i caught up with the nuances of maths..and this love affair continues till date!:-):-)...and all the best on ur quest for a big discovery in maths!

Yes, I thought so that you're just writing some funny side of maths in that post, and I'm kind of feeling embarassed on hearing I said that to a Maths teacher! :) Sorry about that! And by the way, I too am actually not that bad at Maths, having been a top performer right since my school days. In fact, I remember my Maths teacher at International School Moshi (I was studying there in my childhood) once called me a "mathematician", and at that time I was only 10!
As far as my ambition to make it big is concerned - actually that ambition has remained dormant inside me since a long time, because I haven't got the time that I need to spend on it. I am thoroughly intrigued by "unsolved" problems in mathematics and keep thinking about them every day, but never get the time to sit down and work on them (not that I will be able to solve them even if I do sit down, though!)

I have to disagree. Maths is the most interesting subject. I used to spend a lot of time with maths just because i liked it. Its a great timepass.

ooh i never knew that you are a math teacher. Though i said that i hate math. I dont hate it as a subject. I hate it bcoz, all thru my life i have never got full grades in math. Just a mark or two less. And that has irritated me a lot. I mean i always want full marks in maths n stats n i was never able to get them n someone else would top that subject. I guess my ill feeling stems from this fact. But one thing for sure, Math can be fun , only in the teacher is good. ( and students dont sleep;)

YIKES!! Too much math for me- it fries my brain. Ask me to diagram a sentence and I'm good, but anything with numbers- can't do.
Let's just say mathematics was never one of the things in life that lit me up. LOL :o)
